The custom mobile easel rig Boberg uses here
is peculiar to her.
Anna Boberg (Swedish, 1864-1935) began by designing handicraft and tapestry patterns as well as porcelain in exquisite Art Nouveau style. This however, wasn’t what she was made for. She was destined for bigger things. In the summer of 1901, Boberg travelled to Norway and Lofoten for the first time.
The countryside, the special light, the aurora borealis and the midnight sun resonated with Anna. She made some three dozen return visits and had a winter nest and a summer house built there. Boberg had found her spirit place, her motifs and her style as a painter.
Anna would often make arduous expeditions to make oil sketches on cardboard in the summer night north of the Arctic Circle. Daylight lingers longer than seems natural in the sky above the mountains there and her paintings hold the essence of that rare light in all its aspects.
