Anonymous, Stereographic and pornographic. 8 Illicit Victorian era 3D softcore images from deep in the archives of Holland’s Rjiksmuseum.

“New Stereoscopes in which one can distinctly see what’s going on in one’s house while having a peek in the instrument.”
Petit Journal pour Rire, No. 172. 1859.

The way a Victorian stereoscope worked was to demonstrate that our perception of depth can be simulated by two flat perspectives of the same object as perceived by each of our eyes and presented in such a way that only the left eye can see the left image and the right eye the other one.

A century and a half ago, these instruments were cutting edge technology. Those that could afford them could experience foreign cities, strange new animals, warzones.

Of course it was just a matter of time before photographers began producing exotic stereographs.

Anonymously.
