Jean-Léon Gérôme
Jean-Léon Gérôme was one of the most celebrated painters of nineteenth-century France. A professor at the École des Beaux-Arts, he filled the Salon with scenes of gladiators, bazaars and soldiers painted in such meticulous, almost photographic detail that, a century later, they inspired Hollywood epics. This collection runs from a quiet portrait he painted at twenty, while studying under Paul Delaroche, to the bold silks of his Bashi-Bazouk and a lion keeping watch over the desert.
Each print comes with the story of its own painting. For the showman behind them, with his nudes and his fantasy Orient, read our Gérôme article.
