Katsushika Hokusai : A Tour of Japanese Waterfalls
Around 1832, fresh from his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and The Great Wave, Hokusai went chasing water. A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces (Shokoku taki meguri), sometimes called A Tour of Japanese Waterfalls, gathers eight famous falls, most of them sacred places on pilgrims’ routes, and turns each into living, moving pattern in deep imported blues. Travellers and pilgrims shrink to specks beside them. He signed every sheet “Iitsu, formerly Hokusai”. Here are five of the eight.
