The Shells of Mauritz Van der Valk
These gorgeous still lives of shells are by the Dutch painter, etcher and art historian, Mauritz Van der Valk. The son of a house painter, he learned his primary painting techniques from his father. In 1889 his Amsterdam studio caught fire and (using the insurance payout) he went to Paris, where he lived for some time and met his fiure wife Baukje van Mesdag. In 1893 the family returned to the Netherlands.
