The Call, 1902
$915.00
Painted on a remote Polynesian island a year before the artist’s death, The Call is one of an small and overlooked number of late works that explore the mysteries of life. Two women stand with bare feet, as if on sacred ground. One woman gestures to someone outside the picture, perhaps responding to a “call” from fate or destiny. By this stage in his life, Gauguin had finely tuned his extraordinary ability to paint from memory and the imagination producing this mysterious, dreamlike image.
