In the 1700s, lighthearted, erotic decorative schemes and themes were popular among the French aristocracy. In this fully Rococco painting, Boucher painted some of the figures in gray, as if made of stone, while the others are fully human. He’s toying with us, with the boundaries of painting and sculpture, as well as with fantasy and reality. The original purpose of this painting isn’t known. It may have been exhibited as an independent work of art, but it probably was an intial design for a tapestry.
