Still Life with Grapes and Other Fruit, Luca Forte (Italian) circa 1630s
The life of Luca Forte is sketchy. He’s a bit of a mystery. He was born in Naples around 1615 and became a painter of the Baroque period specialising in still lives and very few of his works survive. Amongst them is this absolute corker. A woven frame of freshly cut vines, overflowing with translucent violet grapes sits in a steel pail surrounded by harvest fruit. Behind all of this mouthwatering wine season loveliness a bird swoops in the sky over Neopolitan hills.
