L’Estampe Originale : Tiger in the Jungle, 1893. Paul Elie Ranson (French, 1862-1909).

Paul Ranson used curving, wavelike forms to create his vibrant and elegant stylized vision of a tiger. Influenced by the calligraphic forms and heavy outlines that characterized Japanese prints (so à la mode at the time), he channelled these into this striking image. Tiger in the Jungle is Ranson’s most famous lithograph. Printed in graphic blacks and grays on a pleasing yellow (not too saturated or warm), it appeared in L’Estampe Originale, an 1890s publication that showcased a curated selection of original prints by contemporary artists to collectors.
