Rinus Knopper (1909-1993). Official photographer of Amsterdam City’s new towns, 1953-1959.

There’s not much to see here yet. That’s the point. This is something monumental as it emerges from zero, from a huge canvas of flatness. 70 years ago, Rinus Knopper’s job was to efficently document the development stages of Amsterdam’s much needed public housing. The new towns, the new suburbs-to-be, springing up and spreading all over the outskirts of Amsterdam in the 1950s. Pure, honest documentation of a grand scale urban project.

Like the construction workers themselves, he was, in effect, a city council worker too. The effort he put in was likely akin to that of a tradesman. Doing a job well. Taking a pride.

The result is easy on the eye, strangely calming and hopeful. This is birth and potential. Man moulding landscape.

A landscape morphing into future dreams. An epic evolution that touched the lives of generations.
